Growing up

Brady had his two week check-up today (two days early because his doctor is going to be out of town on his actual two weeks). He was 21.5 inches long and he gained 6 ounces in five days! He now weighs 8 pounds 14 ounces.

Brady has had really dry and peeling skin on his hands and legs/feet. Dr. Tickles said that it is normal for babies and that it should go away within a week or two. His belly button still has his cord attached, but it looks good and it should be coming off soon too.

We had our first non-doctor outing yesterday. Brady's Aunt Stacey and Uncle Jeff had a barbeque for Memorial Day. He got to spend a lot of time bonding with Grandpa Don while Stacey, mom and I went shopping and Jeff, his son Derek, and Jeremiah cooked the food! Brady was really good all day...we took his favorite chair with us so he was happy! Between Grandpa's shoulder and his chair he was content!

Brady has been doing really good during the days, eating, sleeping and spending some time awake looking around. The past few nights we haven't been able to get too much sleep because he hasn't wanted to go to bed! He's a night owl. He eats around 9 or 10 and then he wants to snack at 11, 12 and 1 before finally going to sleep. Unfortunately he likes to grunt and cry and wail between snacks so we end up walking with him or bouncing him. Luckily once he finally gets down he usually sleeps a good 4.5 hours. Dr. Tickles said not to feed him snacks, try to give him a pacifier or a little bit of water instead. And we can try Mylacon drops in case he has gas. Overall we can't complain. He's good to us! We can nap during the day to catch up on sleep!

Story of Brady's birth

I just realized we never posted anything about Brady's birth on the web site...just pictures.

Well, we arrived at the hospital at about 6:45 a.m. Thursday. We got checked in and then went up to the maternity floor. There they put me in a room, got me in my gown and Dr. Bavishi came to check me out. I was still dialated at a 2. She said they were going to try to break my water and then let the contractions start on thier own. They hooked me up to a couple monitors to watch Brady's heartbeat and the strength of my contractions. Then they took some blood and started an IV. That was unpleasant, they tried to put it in my hand first and it wouldn't go because my vein was "valving" whatever that means. So they had to put it in my other arm. Then they hooked me up to a blood pressure cuff that would self inflate every 20 minutes. (The worst part about that was they put it on the arm with the hand they tried to put the IV in and every time the cuff filled up it made my hand swell up and I thought it was going to pop! Now, nine days later the entire back of my hand is brown and green with a nasty bruise.)

So Dr. Bavishi used this knitting hook type of tool and tried to break my water. Only a little fluid came out so she said they would have to start the dreaded Patosin. Yikes. That's the medicine that MAKES you have contractions. Lovely. So they started that in my IV and right away I started having contractions. They said they would up the amount about every 20 minutes or so and see how things were progressing. After a while the contractions started coming fast and hard and Brady's heartbeat started to drop below 100 beats per minute during them. He just couldn't handle them. So they took the Patocin off and tried again to break my water...no such luck. So they let me go on my own for an hour. About 10:00 I was dialated to a 3 which was good. They thought they would try the Patosin again on a really low dose. At 11:15 I told Jeremiah that I wanted to sit more upright in the bed since I was reclining a lot. He pushed the button to move me to a sitting position and woosh! My water finally broke. After that things progressed pretty good and by 1:30 the contractions were becoming really painful and close together. I asked for the epidural around 2 p.m. and had to wait until about 2:30 before getting it. (You have to get a whole bag of IV fluids before they put in the epidural) That last 45 minutes before it were pretty tough. I didn't like it.

When the guy came in to put it in I had to sit really still. Of course they like to do it in the middle of a contraction so I have a horrible contraction and this clown putting a giant needle in my back sending shooting pains down my leg while I feel like I'm going to fall over and die and what do you know - the stupid blood pressure cuff decides to inflate so my arm and my hand feel like their going to pop as well. But then, as soon as it came, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, drugs. It was wonderful. I laid back in bed and finally got a little rest. I won't get into details about the next part, you can ask my family who was there for details if you want, but let me just say that when they put the epidural in they push some air in there and the air has to come out, if you get my drift, and you are numb from the waist down so you can't really tell what's happening....it made for some funny moments. Jeremiah's favorite thing to say to remind me of labor is "Was that me?"

Brady seemed to be doing well with the contractions and around 5 p.m. they decided to check me again. I was finally dialated to a 5. Halfway there, 10 hours later. They said we needed to start talking about a c-section. Jeremiah and I decided it would be ok if necessary. I wasn't looking forward to the recovery part, but at that point I really wasn't interested in the pain of regular delivery either. They said they would check again in an hour and if there wasn't any progress they would get me ready for surgery. At 6 there was no change and they started prepping me for delivery at about 6:30. I think the nerves took over at that point and started to offset the epidural. Some pain came back and I got the shivers. I couldn't stop shaking and my teeth were chattering. It was scaring Jeremiah. He didn't know what was going on...and neither did I. I couldn't control it. Dr. Bavishi said it was normal though.

Around 7:00 Jeremiah got his scrubs on and they rolled me down the hall to the operating room. They have one just for c-sections on the maternity floor so it was a quick walk. They told Jeremiah to wait in the hall while they got me ready and they would come get him when they were ready to start. They got me in there, strapped me onto the operating table and loaded me up with drugs. Finallly when they were ready to start Jeremiah came in and was able to sit an arms length away from me and hold my hand. Within 15 minutes Brady was out. Jeremiah jumped up to take pictures and see Brady and then after they got him cleaned up did their 1-minute and 5-minute checks on him they brought him to see me before he went to the nursery. Jeremiah went with Brady while they stitched me up, but he kept coming back in with pictures on the digital camera to show me what they were doing.

Then I puked. Too many drugs! I was numb up to my chin and I felt like I wasn't breathing even though I was. They gave me some other drug to offset the effects of the epidural and I felt a lot better.

Once they got me fixed up they wheeled me back down to my room and checked me out while I waited for Jeremiah and Brady to come in. Once they came back I got to hold Brady for the first time. Then they wanted me to try to feed him and what do you know, the little booger did it right the first time. He was hungry! I was starving. I hadn't ate breakfast. When he was eating I asked if I got to eat too and they said, sure, ice chips tonight, real food tomorrow. Bummer.

That's it though, that's how our little boy came into the world. He was officially born at 7:33 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2006. He was 8 pounds, 8.7 ounces and was 20 inches long. He had a head full of dark brown hair and greyish-blue eyes. Perfect in every way.

bath time

He knew something unpleasant was about to happen when Daddy started undressing him on the kitchen counter!

bath time

No, that's not water on his face and belly, that's from the fountain he made when his diaper came off...good thing it was at the beginning of bath time and not the end!!!

bath time

Cleaning the belly is tough work with the umbilical cord stump still attached.

First doctors visit a success!

Brady had his first doctors appointment this morning with Dr. Tickles. I'm not kidding, his pediatricians name is Debra Farmer-Tickles! They measured Brady at 22 inches, although I think he was probably more like 21 inches...they mark the paper on the table above his head and below his toes and then measure between, but the paper was kind of crinkled beneath him a little. He's growing though and that's all that matters. He is back to his birth weight already - 8 pounds, 8 ounces. They said that's really good because most babies take up to two weeks to get back to their birth weight. He's definately getting plenty of milk! When Dr. Tickles was examining him she picked him up and was holding him and he moved his head all around without flopping it and was holding it up really good for a couple seconds at a time. We told her that he has flung himself onto his side twice. He'll be laying on his back and then all of a sudden he just rolls onto his side and flops back onto his back. When she got done examining him she said he looked great - jaundice is going away, circumcision is healing nicely and she said he acts more like a 2-month old than a one-week old baby!!!

Last night he went four hours between feedings which was awesome because that meant like three hours of sleep for each of us! This morning he went five hours between feedings because his scheduled feeding was right in the middle of the doctors appointment.

Yesterday and today he's been awake a lot more. The first few days home he pretty much ate, slept and pooped. Now he's spending a few hours during the day playing with us on the floor or sitting in his bouncy seat looking around.

Dr. Tickles said we should still wait another week before we can take him outside for walks or go anywhere with him. Although she did say we can go to Aunt Stacey and Uncle Jeff's for a barbeque Monday. We go back to see her for his regular two-week check up on Tuesday.

So far, so good. He's the best baby in the world (though I am a little bias).

Ahhhh, nothing like a good feeding to make a baby smile! See, maternity ward hospital food really isn't that bad, is it Brady!

Jeremiah came to break the news to the waiting family.

Mommy and baby, happy as can be!

Precious boy

Our little angel.
Luckily Brady has taken a liking to the pacifier already.

Meeting friends

Holly was so excited to meet her little brother! She couldn't stop sniffing him and even gave him a slurp on the back of his head!

Amber didn't know quite what to think of her little brother. She sniffed and sniffed him, but whenever he would move she would run away and look at him from a distance! Then she'd sneak back over and give him another sniff!

Our little guy

Brady and mommy in recovery...mommy is still feeling the epidural high!

Brady had his first bath about four hours after he was born. Heather couldn't go to the nursery with him, but daddy did! They taught him how to be an expert baby washer!

Brady and daddy hung out and watched the Yankees, Mets baseball game in daddy's giant hospital bed...daddy got a queen size bed that pulled out from the wall, mommy had to sleep in a standard hospital bed because of the surgery.

He really did cut the cord!!! We were upset because with a c-section the area in the operating room is sterile close to the patient so we didn't think Jeremiah would be allowed to cut the cord...but they left it long and let him cut the excess off in the nursery!!!

He's coming!!!

Brady will be here Thursday at the latest! We had a doctor's appointment this morning and I was dialated to almost 2 cm. Dr. Bavishi said we could wait another week and see if anything else happened, but that she was only on call until Thursday. She said since that was his original due date and since I was starting to dialate they could induce me that morning if we wanted. We said sure, why not! So we check in Thursday at 7 a.m. at Olathe Med Center if he hasn't decided to come before then. She will come break my water and then we'll wait about an hour to an hour and a half to see if anything is progressing on its own. If not, they'll start giving me small doses of Pitocin to help the contractions along. Regardless, he should be here by sometime Thursday afternoon or evening!

We've got three days to get everything done we've been putting off! Actually we're in pretty good shape. We've just got to put away some dishes, vaccuum and clean out the refrigerator! And, maybe mow the yard....that's up to Jeremiah.

Hopefully now that we know Brady's going to be here Thursday we'll sleep a little better the next couple of nights. Last night I kept Jeremiah up most of the night. I had to get up 8 times between 10 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. and then I was wide awake from then until about 6 o'clock. We'll be taking a nap this afternoon!

Jeremiah is going to work Tuesday night and then he'll be off for five weeks so he's excited about that. He can't wait to have his little fishing buddy finally here. He couldn't stop smiling today when we finally set a date for his arrival!

39 weeks in the books

Well, 39 weeks have come and gone...273 days. That's a long time, but it sure has gone by quick when we look back on it all. It seems the only thing Brady wants to do now is grow. I've been having stretching pains on the sides of my uterus all week, and only a few random braxton hicks contractions. Nothing to get excited about. I went for a walk today with the dogs in hopes of getting things moving. Then Jeremiah and I went out to the store and he said I was walking funny. We thought maybe Brady was moving down, but I think now maybe it was just because my legs were hurting from walking. Who knows.

A lot of people are out of the Brady birthday contest already, but there's still a lot more left in it! I happen to agree with Stacey that he should come Sunday since it is Mother's Day you know. I can't think of a more appropriate gift. I think it would be okay if he came Monday too though because that was my Grandpa Fred's birthday. He was my favorite grandpa which is why all of the stuffed animals I had as a kid were named Fred, including my favorite cow who I have had since I was like five and who went to college with me and still sleeps with me and Jeremiah. I digress, I did have one orange colored stuffed animal ant whom I so cleverly named "Orange Ant." He and Fred were best friends.

Well, the weather is supposed to be really nice tomorrow so Jeremiah and I have planned another walk. We'll see if it helps. If it does we'll let everyone know! We're getting anxious, although I have to admit I'm still pretty scared about the whole birthing process. I don't do well with pain. We'll just have to wait and see!

At a standstill

Well, no changes. I'm still only dialated at a 1. I didn't really think I would be any more because I haven't been having any contractions, but we were hoping to at least be a 2!! Jeremiah's pretty bummed out...he wants Brady to be here right now! He keeps coming up with things he wants me to try to induce labor...someone told him walking on a treadmill helps, or swinging really hard in a swing. I figure he'll come when he's ready. I'm getting more and more mentally prepared every day, so by the time he decides to come I should be in good shape.
As of now we have another doctor's appointment scheduled for next Monday morning. We'll see if anything happens between now and then!

Nothing yet...

Ok, so much for any day now! It's been a pretty uneventful week...no contractions, just more stretching pains from him growing even more. I have had increased back pain the past two days though, so maybe that's a sign of things to come. Or maybe it's just a sign that I've been laying around an awful lot! I haven't been sleeping well at all...I get about three to four hours at night and then I toss and turn for one or two and then sleep another couple before getting up for the day. Then I take at least one or two naps on the couch which is quite possibly where the back pain stems from. I've been trying to be a little more active the past few days and at least get out of the house for a few minutes.
Yesterday I wandered around Kmart and the previous two days I took the doggies for a walk around the school across the street. I think today will be a dog walk day. They like it too. Jeremiah keeps trying to get me on the riding mower to do the back yard...he says it will inspire Brady to come out quicker! I don't think so.
We're ready for him to be here though, Jeremiah thinks maybe this is the week - I don't know, I think he could possibly wait another one at the rate he's going! We have a doctor's appointment Monday morning at 9 a.m. We'll find out then if I've dialated any more and see what Dr. Bavishi thinks. The one good thing about making it past today is that she'll be on call from Monday until the 18th so assuming he does come this week or next she will be the one to deliver him. If he came any earlier during non-business hours it would have just been the doctor on duty at the hospital. We like Dr. Bavishi (or as Jeremiah calls her - Da Bavsh) she's very calming.
Well, that's it for now. We'll keep you updated...it really shouldn't be too long now!

38 weeks down! 2 to go!

Holly and Amber can't wait for their brother to arrive!
I can't wait to get my old shape back...my head is starting to look like Charlie Brown's big ol' round head and my body, well, it's starting to look like a heffalump's body!!! Good thing we have a membership to the YMCA...we'll be hitting the gym hard later this summer...I've got 50 pounds to drop!!

Any day now

If "nesting" and back aches are any indication that labor is going to begin soon, we're on our way. I've read that nesting - which is like the extreme urge to clean and tidy up the house in preparation for baby's arrival - is a sign that labor will start any day. Yesterday I did a lot of laundry, cleaned the dining room and kitchen, vacuumed, did the dishes, and cleaned my bathroom. Then I plucked my eyebrows and painted my toenails - not an easy task when your belly protrudes like mine does, but I got them done nonetheless! So either I'm nesting or I was just extremely bored and tired of looking at piles of stuff that needed to be put away.
As far as the backaches go, I think they are a direct result of the above mentioned work...especially the dishes! The role of dishwasher has been played by me lately since our Kenmore one broke. We got the new one, but we're waiting for the floor it ruined to get replaced before we install it!
So we'll keep you updated as to any changes in status. I don't think he's coming today. I think I'll feel different when I wake up in the morning on the day he's coming, but maybe not. We made a list of people to email and people to call when he's born so we'll make sure everyone is notified. Regardless, if he doesn't come either today or Sunday then someone is going to his the jackpot on the birthday contest. You can scroll down to see everyone's picks!
I'm off to do more cleaning now!

Getting Closer

We had a doctor's appointment this morning and learned I am dialated 1 cm and 40% effaced. That's one cm down, nine to go! Unfortunately they're the 9 most painful!!! I'm hoping I can get to at least three or four without really noticing and then wait till six or seven to get the drugs. Once you get the drugs you can't get out of bed.
At the end of the appointment Dr. Bavishi kept saying, "I'll see you in a week, or maybe sooner!" But then she said she thinks he'll come sometime between the 8th and 18th. We'll see! My back has been hurting a lot more lately and I've had like two contractions...a couple days apart. Nothing monumental so far.
We'll keep you updated!
